The Beauty Of Seoul
Samsung Plaza & Rodin Museum
Seoul, Korea " a beguiling space that begs viewers to enter and revel in its presence " Raul A. Barreneche, Architecture, November 1998 The Samsung Centre is composed of three buildings situated in the middle of downtown Seoul. The Rodin Pavilion is part of a larger assemblage of glass interventions designed for the new centre. The design creates an urban place along the base of the three buildings. The design of the small glass pavilion evolved from the placement of two famous pieces of sculpture by Auguste Rodin. The tension created between the frontality of The Gates of Hell and the spatiality of the Burghers of Calais suggested an architecture of gesture and dance. This juxtaposition became a kind of pas de deux between two glass walls. Though similar in execution, the walls respond to different conditions of movement and enclosure. The walls and ceiling glass have different degrees of translucency. The all-glass roof, supported by steel columns, is conceived as an independent element in contrast to the organic forms of the walls. The space takes its character from the contrast between the serenity of the diffuse ceiling light and the fluidity of the dynamic walls.
