Hongdae is a neighbourhood on the north shore of the Han river
located about 10 kms away from the traditional downtown area (jungno). There are several universities located closeby including Ehwa, Yonsei, Sogang and Hongik. There's a unique charm to the area which is hard to capture in pictures. It's young, it's artsy, people are dressed with flair, and it's full of dancing clubs. The high number of university students (100,000+) in the area combined with Hongik being Korea's leading university in arts are probably two reasons why Hongdae is Hongdae. This is where lots of people will spend their friday or saturday night dancing till dawn and having a korean-style breakfast at 6 or 7 am before going home for a bit of sleep. And sure, coming back the next night can be an option. I'm not sure if it's still this way now, but it used to be that every fourth friday of every month was "club night" where a 15,000 wons pass gave access to any dancing club in the area. From what I can remember, there was a great, great ambiance on those days. The pics I'm posting were taken on a weeknight in the early hours and it looks pretty deserted compared to club night. Hmm.. I generally don't take pics when dancing and flirting. I guess you'll have to go there and experience the nightlife on your own. Other than the dancing clubs, there's a multitude of really nicely designed coffee shops / bars / restos / norebangs. This is a quite interesting social phenomenon, not only in Hongdae, but everywhere in Korea. For some reason, ladies there have a bit of what I like to refer to as the "princess syndrom". They not only appreciate but very often expect to be treated as princesses when they go out. This has gone to the point where establishments which don't offer great service, food, and impeccable interior decoration end up being snubbed by the ladies. And well, the gents follow the ladies hehe. The competition is harsh, and in the end, this is all good for the consumer. Personally, I share korean ladies's opinion on this point. I'm the prince of Seoul for some reason Cheers |
