Make this forum more international?

Yorum: #1
Well, in the thread (Korean forum was so silent), some people suggested to give a more international life to this forum. So, after the post of "little round fort" (Singidunum or something like this. I slept too much in my latin class to find the exact word by mind) on Serbia.

I think people from foreign countries should show more faces of their country.

So let's begin with..... France (surprise). Since (assuming there is still someone here that hasn't noticed it) I live (and was born) in the southern France.

The history of the tricolore flag is to be linked to the revolution. The red and blue are the colors of Paris. And white is the color of the kings. You can see the image of Paris encircling the king.

[Resim: French%20Flag.jpg]

Ok, so when you ask someone what he has in mind about France, what does he first think about? Paris..... but does France has something else to offer than Paris, well what does he think apart of this? Eiffel, wine, cheese eating surrendering monkeys..... ok none of those are landmarks or architecture.

Sadly, outside Paris, France isn't that known. Worse, when one says "Notre Dame" people only think of the cathedral of Paris. While tons of churchs in France are named Notre Dame (and the one of Paris is certainly not the most beautyfull, far from that).

A lot of churchs are gothics (of course, considering France has the oldest and first gothic churchs). Some Romanesque churchs and Byzantine ones too. Where are the Baroque churchs in this, France is supposed to be a catholic country, why is there nothing Baroque? Well there are no full Baroque church in France, but sometimes you'll see some details in some churchs bu rarely. Most French Baroque stuffs aren't present in churchs but in other buildings.

I usualy give the name of the city where you'll find it, but if I don't, it's you have it in the name (Notre Dame de Chartres, is in..... Chartres)

You'll notice that in French, Chateau doesn't exactly match castle, and palace doesn't exactly match palais. We use different definitions.

Anyway, let's begin, pictures borrowed on the net. But I also link the websites with.

I'll do it civilizations by civilizations. Because France isn't an homogenous country. There are several civilizations inside it (and I'm not talking about ethinicity because it could be divided even inside it). The fix the civilization, language are the main criteria I'll follow. Those do not match kingdoms either.

[Resim: France-aires-lng.jpg]

Ok, first:

France

It is the one that absorbed the others. It's also the biggest and most powerfull. It has the most interesting architecture but is rather poor about landscapes. It should be bigger and include Wallonia in Belgium to be complete. Among with the Channel Islands.

[Resim: fr-ilefr.gif]

Since it has no real symbol outisde the French flag, the flag of Ile de France is the most appropriate. It's 3 Fleurs de Lys. Symbol that has been took back from the crusades. It means prosperity. The language is the French and the cultural capital is Paris.

So let's begin with Paris and its surrounding.

Notre Dame de Chartres (Cathedral): was a very innovative church and introduced new way of building. That has been used in many gothic churchs since. It was a monster in size when they made it. 115m tall and very big for a church built in 1260.

Saint Pierre in Beauvais, was a mad dream. They wanted to make the world tallest church (and made it but for a short time), the roof nearly is 50m above the gound (world tallest choir), in the end it nearly uses only glass to maintain the stone, because with a stone suspension it would collapse. The bell tower reached nearly 170m but collapsed very soon getting for a short time the title of world tallest structure. Leaving an uncomplete church.

Notre Dame de Rouen, in Normandy, this one was originaly quiet old, but it was modified several time. The last one in the 19th century, raised it at 153m and taking the world tallest title to Saint Nicolas, to lose it one year later to Cologne. It is here that Richard Lionheart, Norman king of England, is buried. As Rouen was his prefered city.
