South Koreans' average life expectancy rose to 79.2 years last year from 78.6 years in 2005 on better healthcare and nutrition, with women outliving men by 6.6 years.

According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), Tuesday, male life expectancy was 75.7 years, compared with the average of 75.8 years for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member economies. Korean women's life expectancy reached 82.4 years, higher than the OECD average of 81.4 years.

The gap between the life expectancy of men and women narrowed to 6.6 years in 2006. The age difference has been narrowing since 1986 when it peaked at 8.4 years.

``Korean men's probability of death has declined at a steady pace over the years, narrowing the life span difference. Men have become increasingly concerned about their health, while more women now work and have life patterns similar to that of men,'' an NSO official said.

Nonetheless, the 6.6 year difference is higher than the OECD average of 5.7 years, but lower than France's 7.1 years and Japan's 7 years.

A 45 year-old Korean man could expect to live 32.6 more years last year and a 45 year-old woman an additional 38.6 years. Baby boys born last year had a 45.2 percent probability of living up to 80 years, while baby girls had a 69 percent probability.

Meanwhile, cancer was the biggest threat for Korean men and circulatory system diseases, such as high blood pressure, were the greatest health concern for Korean women. Baby boys had a 27.6 percent probability of dying of cancer, while baby girls had a 15.3 percent probability. The probability of dying of circulatory system problems was 22.3 percent for males and 27.5 percent for females.

Koreans are now more likely to die from cancer, suicide and diabetes than in the past, but the threat of car accidents and liver disease has decreased.

The life span of Korean males can be raised by 5.05 years if cancer deaths are taken out, while the expectancy among females can be boosted by 2.62 years without cancer deaths, the office said.
