I went up to Seoul last weekend, and stayed at the newly opened Ibis Myeongdong Hotel. Great hotel, great price! From the lobby I looked towards Shinsegae Department Store. It appears as though they've torn down the old store! I thought that they were just renovating it. What the hell were they thinking! Let's tear down one of the few older buildings left in the city. It was a beautiful building, and looked so nice with the old Bank of Korea building across the road, and the Standard and Chartered Bank next to it. They could have turned it into their version of Avenuel, or a upscale boutique hotel. Even a tower overtop of it, like the Hearst Building in New York could have been interesting. While I know that it wasn't a particularly old building, probably a bit less than 100 years old, and built by the Japanese, it deserved better! Shame on Shinsegae!



PS What's happening to Seoul! The first time I went, in 1997, the only things I liked about it were the palaces and Insadong. I found it to be architecturally depressing, and not very cosmopolitan/international. These days it's amazing. Every time I go (once every 2-3 months) something new has opened/been built/been renovated. (Check out www.seoulstyle.com). This city has so much potential! Now if they could only do something about Busan! Another city with potential. Hopefully, things will change here too! Maybe Seoul's mayor should run for office in Busan!
