Korean course goes beyond pop

Hong Kong students are being offered the chance to extend their knowledge of South Korean culture beyond pop superstar Rain and costume dramas like Jewel In The Palace.



The City University of Hong Kong this year will launch its first associate degree programme in Korean studies.



Course organiser Wanda Lau Woon-yee said it was being offered not because South Korean culture was "hip" this year, but because of an urgent need for linguists and other skilled workers arising from trade ties between Hong Kong, South Korea and the mainland.



"There are more than 700 Korean companies in Hong Kong and there's a strong demand for personnel who can speak Chinese, Korean and English," said Ms Lau, acting head of the university's division of language studies.



She said the programme was developed from the department's Korean language courses, which have been offered since 2001. Graduates who took those courses have found it easier to find jobs, with starting salaries 10 to 20 per cent higher than other students, she added. "China is Korea's biggest business partner, and Hong Kong is fourth," she said. "We realised that there's a demand."



Students will be taught not only language skills but also about the culture and society of South Korea, business communication, translating and computer skills.



South Korean pop culture has taken Hong Kong by storm in recent years, with screenings of South Korean films, TV series and shows devoted to pop idols. Jewel In The Palace, which airs on TVB Jade, had more than 2 million viewers over the past week. ATV Home has shown the South Korean drama The Legendary Policewoman.
