I have a couple questions about Korean surnames.



• How come the Korean surname 이 ( 李 ) is often romanized as "Lee" when the Korean pronunciation is clearly "Yi" like the famous Admiral Yi (I'm assuming his surname is indeed 이 ).



• I realize that Hanja (Chinese characters) literacy rate in South Korea lag behind that of the greater China (mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong... etc.) and Japan, but do most Koreans know how to write their own names at least in Hanja? Also, if the Hanja literacy rate is so low, how do people come up with names for their children? Just by sound?



• I guess this one is more about Korean romanization in general rather than just about Korean surnames. Since Koreans use Hangul, a phonetic spelling system, how come there are so many variations in Korean romanization? I've seen many Korean syllables spelled in several ways, sometimes in the same paragraph.
